The COMMUNAL programme aims to identify how cultural institutions can best serve their communities through knowledge exchanges between Aspex and Brighton CCA.

SUMMARY:Eat the Archives: Museums and Food
DESCRIPTION:For over two years\, theatre-chef Leo Burtin has taken up residence in Manchester Jewish Museum’s archives\, finding ways to bringing our collection to life by cooking and sharing food. Through Eat the Archives\, we have worked with diverse communities and participants to host community feasts\, hold online and in-person events\, produce films and share stories in a myriad of ways. \nWe would like to invite you to join us at the museum for our Knowledge Sharing Day. We will be exploring what we have learned from our experiments investigating the relationship between food\, museums\, audience engagement and artistic practice\, and facilitating conversations about how food can become a core part of your creative practice or programme. \nThis all-day event will be an opportunity for artists\, programmers\, museum teams\, creative facilitators and cultural practitioners to explore how they can integrate food practices into their work. It will also be an opportunity for those interested in food to consider how they might engage with cultural organisations. \nThe day will feature presentations\, practical workshop activities\, film screenings and of course\, plenty of food! \nFollowing the event at 5.30pm there will be a public book launch of Leo’s book ‘With Bread’ including a foreword from our Creative Producer Dr. Laura Seddon. Tickets for the sharing day include the evening book launch. \nFull schedule to be announced and a vegetarian lunch will be provided for all.

SUMMARY:Eat the Archives: At Home
DESCRIPTION:Fancy hosting Eat the Archives in your own home for free? \nHost a unique dinner part at your house and relive the stories of remarkable Jewish Mancunians from the museum’s collection over a three-course meal for you and your guests to enjoy. Theatre chef Leo Burtin and museum producer Laura Seddon will visit your home to provide the food\, objects from our collection and\, of course\, the stories. \nWe have three different story menus for you to choose from in advance\, each based on one of the museum’s themes of Journeys\, Communities and Identities. Each menu contains different stories and dishes that explore personal histories from our collection\, relating to that theme. \nThere will be story-telling\, good food and good conversation! \nWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW\nEat the Archives: At Home is available to book between 5 July and 6 August 2021. \nAll the food will be vegetarian and can also be made vegan or provided by kosher suppliers upon request. The food can be brought to your home pre-prepared\, or we can work with you to prepare the meal in your own kitchen. If you would prefer to hold your dinner party in the museum’s learning kitchen and studio this can be arranged. \nYou are in control of who you would like to invite. From our experience we recommend around six guests and have found it is a great chance to bring people together from different backgrounds\, who might not already know each other or would not normally meet. \nEat the Archives: At Home is funded and we can offer these dinner parties for free if you live in Greater Manchester. However the number of parties we can offer is limited so don’t miss out! \n If you are interested\, contact laura@manchesterjewishmuseum.com for a further chat.

DESCRIPTION:We are the people with whom we eat. \nCompanion\, noun. \nFrom the Latin com-\, together with & panis\, bread \n‘with bread’ is a performance where the History of bread meets personal histories of migration. Over the course of the performance\, audience members take part in making flatbreads which are served\, along with a seasonal stew\, at the end of the show. The story told in with bread traces the journey of this staple and heavily symbolic food from prehistory to Brexit Britain\, via biblical times and the Arab Spring. \nwith bread is in turn a poetic history lesson\, an opportunity to hear voices from the margins\, and a baking class. with bread is an attempt to explore what it means to share a culture\, to make community and to belong in an everchanging and globalised world. \nIn the context of Brexit and heated debates around identity politics\, with bread brings people together in a joyous celebration of diversity and difference. The piece is performed with a different cast of migrant locals everywhere it takes place.

SUMMARY:Good Appetite
DESCRIPTION:Part of Manchester Jewish Museum’s Festival of Belonging \nJoin us to explore what makes us feel that we belong\, how we assimilate in new places and what happens when we don’t belong. As part of our ‘wandering’ phase\, we have been thinking about the stories in our collection of Jewish people who came to Manchester\, how they attempted to assimilate and foster a sense of belonging. \nTheatre Chef Leo is your host for a unique foodie film experience. Enter the diverse world of the Jewish kitchen\, where stories are sifted into dishes\, history is stirred in with spices\, and cultures from around the world are sprinkled on top. Taste\, listen and tell your own story. \nIn preparation for this event\, Leo is learning to make three dishes close to the heart of three Manchester foodies and the process is being woven into a film by Jon Randall. Part documentary\, part Saturday Kitchen wannabee\, part art film\, Good Appetite will be a feast for all the senses! \n  \nTickets on sale soon!

SUMMARY:The Witching Way (Halifax)
DESCRIPTION:Part fable\, part gig\, part concept album\, this brand new rock opera follows W.’s coming-of-age in a piece that is a rallying cry for the next generation of feminists. \nTwo years ago\, Ali Matthews and Leo Burtin walked the 65 miles that separate Pendle Hill from Lancaster Castle\, retracing the footsteps of the so-called Lancashire Witches – women who were hanged for being out-of-the-ordinary. \nInspired by their journey\, they made The Witching Way\, a musical extravaganza for our times\, confronting Trumpism and homophobia\, and championing the #MeToo movement. \nAfter succumbing to peer pressure and trying to be someone she’s not\, W. is transported to a strange and wondrous landscape. In order to find her way home\, she must embark on a quest\, reckon with her history\, overcome obstacles and ultimately find her voice. \nWith original music spanning punk\, folk\, blues and rock\, The Witching Way features a live band\, music video visuals and animation to deliver a magically-charged rock opera for all ages. \nThe Witching Way experiments with multimedia gig-theatre to explore feminist storytelling and the histories of the Pendle Witches. Join Ali and her band to experience a story brimming with witches\, history\, feminism\, indie music\, experimental theatre and stunning animations.

SUMMARY:The Witching Way
DESCRIPTION:Two years ago Ali Matthews & Leo Burtin walked the 65 miles from Pendle Hill to Lancaster Castle\, retracing the footsteps of the so-called Lancashire Witches who were hanged for seeming a little out of the ordinary. Reflecting on this pilgrimage led them to create the story of The Witching Way. \nAfter trying to be somebody she’s not amidst the perils of peer pressure\, W (our teen witch protagonist) is transported to a cottage in a strange landscape. In order to find her way home she must embark on a quest to reckon with her history\, overcome extraordinary obstacles\, and ultimately find her voice. SUMMARY:A Matter of Public Taste(s): Food\, Performance\, and Commensality
DESCRIPTION:A working group session of the American Society for Theatre Research \nConveners: Joshua Abrams\, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama\nKristin Hunt\, Arizona State University \nThis working group interrogates the role food plays in constructing\, nourishing\, and contesting notions of the public. From food as a site of creolization\, tracing narratives of contact\, colonialism\, and interaction in both domestic and public spaces\, to initiatives like José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen\, which has fed publics across states of emergency\, food collides bodily and political realities and imaginaries as well as serving as a means of staging and preserving public identities. Pursuing our research within the context of the kitchen\, itself a site in which public and private spheres often intersect\, participants will develop a pre-conference off-site food performance engaging relationships between labor\, food\, the human body\, and the collective publics invoked in events of cooking and eating. The in-conference session will allow participants to share their work and discoveries made in performance within a broader discussion about the intersections of food\, performance\, and public spaces.

SUMMARY:Listening Tables II
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Acts of Listening Lab postdoctoral fellow Rajni Shah\, ‘Listening Tables’ is a series of four events exploring the relationships between listening\, gathering\, and feminisms. Rather than inviting guest speakers\, Rajni has invited a guest listener to be present at each event\, who will bring their own way of listening\, shaped by their unique lived experiences\, to the table. These events will be carefully held\, and Rajni especially welcomes people who feel marginalised or silenced by more mainstream structures of dialogue and interaction. \nThis second Listening Table will be attended by special guest Leo Burtin. Leo and Rajni met in 2012 when Leo worked on Rajni’s show Glorious\, which had at its heart the idea that strangers might become friends. Since then\, Leo has gone on to work as a producer\, writer\, researcher\, and chef\, creating shows and public interventions that use food as the catalyst to share stories from the margins and to generate transformative conversations between strangers. As a queer white man\, Leo wonders: in what ways could a feminist approach to listening lead us towards radical new imaginings of hospitality? \n*Strictly limited capacity with compulsory sign-up (max 25) – guests will receive further information and a reminder a week before the event. \nFor information on other Listening Table events\, please see this link. \n

SUMMARY:Manchester Jewish Museum Potluck Supper
DESCRIPTION:This is the first in a series of events I will be hosting together with Manchester Jewish Museum as their first ‘food artist in residence’. For the next few months\, I will be working with the museum’s staff\, volunteers\, stakeholders and visitors to develop a participatory programme of activity related to food. \nUsing diverse examples of Jewish food as a starting point\, we will explore cultural food connections related to the theme of belonging. Food will be considered as a traveller and migrant in terms of how certain foods and recipes arrived in Manchester and the roles they played within the Jewish communities. We are interested in exploring food as cultural identity\, food as art and food as a means of bringing people together. \nWe are beginning to shape some ideas about what having a ‘food artist’ lead part of the museum’s programme might mean\, and what kind of activities this might lead us to undertake. This event will feature a communal dinner cooked from ingredients brought along by our guests. \nPlease get in touch to find out more!

SUMMARY:Performance and Death Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Part of Sick! Festival\, this symposium examines works that explore death\, dying and grief. Artists whose practices span performance\, visual art and film will join clinical practitioners and academics to reflect on the responsibility that artists may or may not bear to the human subjects of their performances\, those who participate in its creation and the audiences who experience the finished works. \nThe symposium explores the proposition that\, as the boundaries between performance practices and other art-forms break down\, it is often the demands and sensitivities of subject matter that shape artistic practice. For many interdisciplinary artists and performance-makers\, consideration of subject takes precedence over art form\, in the way that a work is conceived\, developed and presented to audiences. In particular\, the process of engaging with subject matter that is emotionally challenging has itself become a creative practice incorporating approaches to aesthetics\, research\, participation and presentation. \nArtists and academics presenting and discussing their work at the event included: Mats Staub (Interdisciplinary digital artist) Prof. Mahesh Nirmalan (Manchester Royal infirmary’s Critical Care Unit) Steven Eastwood (Documentary Film Maker) Dr Richard Talbot and Dr. Sheila McCormick (University of Salford) Leo Burtin and Ali Wilson (Performance Makers) and members of the theatre companies Ridiculusmus and Quarantine. \nThe symposium will also include an opportunity to experience and participate in Sheila McCormick’s ‘Death\, Dinner and Performance’ project\, a performance event that places the taboo subjects of death and dying around the dinner table for discussion. \nLunch/tea/coffee is included in the ticket. \nAdmission: £25/£10

SUMMARY:The Midnight Soup
DESCRIPTION:The Midnight Soup is a piece of theatre during which the audience prepare a meal that they share at the end. \nThe piece starts as a monologue and gently opens out to become a conversation. It tells the story of an unremarkable woman who every day sat down to meticulously record the facts of her life in a diary\, until one day in 2012 she chose her own death. \nThe Midnight Soup is the love letter of a grandson to his grandmother. It is also an edible memorial\, celebrating a life lived to the rhythm of the seasons. \nIt is cleverly and subtly constructed.
