SUMMARY:Eat the Archives: At Home
DESCRIPTION:Fancy hosting Eat the Archives in your own home for free? \nHost a unique dinner part at your house and relive the stories of remarkable Jewish Mancunians from the museum’s collection over a three-course meal for you and your guests to enjoy. Theatre chef Leo Burtin and museum producer Laura Seddon will visit your home to provide the food\, objects from our collection and\, of course\, the stories. \nWe have three different story menus for you to choose from in advance\, each based on one of the museum’s themes of Journeys\, Communities and Identities. Each menu contains different stories and dishes that explore personal histories from our collection\, relating to that theme. \nThere will be story-telling\, good food and good conversation! \nWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW\nEat the Archives: At Home is available to book between 5 July and 6 August 2021. \nAll the food will be vegetarian and can also be made vegan or provided by kosher suppliers upon request. The food can be brought to your home pre-prepared\, or we can work with you to prepare the meal in your own kitchen. If you would prefer to hold your dinner party in the museum’s learning kitchen and studio this can be arranged. \nYou are in control of who you would like to invite. From our experience we recommend around six guests and have found it is a great chance to bring people together from different backgrounds\, who might not already know each other or would not normally meet. \nEat the Archives: At Home is funded and we can offer these dinner parties for free if you live in Greater Manchester. However the number of parties we can offer is limited so don’t miss out! \n If you are interested\, contact laura@manchesterjewishmuseum.com for a further chat.

SUMMARY:Eat the Archives: Live!
DESCRIPTION:Join Theatre Chef Leo Burtin in our brand-new learning kitchen for a culinary journey through our archives\, where stories come alive through taste. \nLeo will prepare for you a three-course meal of dishes inspired by some of the stories of journeys and arrivals from our archive. From the streets of Cheetham Hill to trans-Atlantic adventures\, Leo will use objects from our collection alongside the tastes and smells of the dishes to transport you through these stories of the past. By sitting together and eating together\, we will learn of the power of food as a way of rediscovering the past and sharing our own stories\, as well as hopefully making some new connections. \nA must for foodies who love stories as a side order. \nThe food served will be vegetarian but is not under Beth Din supervision. Any allergies or dietary requirements let us know by emailing tickets@manchesterjewishmuseum.com \nEat the Archives: Live has been created by Leo Burtin\, designed by Sheila Ghelani\, produced by Louise Cross (Making Room) and supported by Arts Council England and University of Leeds: School of Performance and Cultural Industries. With special thanks to Manchester Jewish Museum Foodie Group

SUMMARY:with bread (Lincoln) - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:We are the people with whom we eat. \nCompanion\, noun. \nFrom the Latin com-\, together with & panis\, bread \n‘with bread’ is a performance where the History of bread meets personal histories of migration. Over the course of the performance\, audience members take part in making flatbreads which are served\, along with a seasonal stew\, at the end of the show. The story told in with bread traces the journey of this staple and heavily symbolic food from prehistory to Brexit Britain\, via biblical times and the Arab Spring. \nwith bread is in turn a poetic history lesson\, an opportunity to hear voices from the margins\, and a baking class. with bread is an attempt to explore what it means to share a culture\, to make community and to belong in an everchanging and globalised world. \nIn the context of Brexit and heated debates around identity politics\, with bread brings people together in a joyous celebration of diversity and difference. The piece is performed with a different cast of migrant locals everywhere it takes place.

SUMMARY:Good Appetite
DESCRIPTION:Part of Manchester Jewish Museum’s Festival of Belonging \nJoin us to explore what makes us feel that we belong\, how we assimilate in new places and what happens when we don’t belong. As part of our ‘wandering’ phase\, we have been thinking about the stories in our collection of Jewish people who came to Manchester\, how they attempted to assimilate and foster a sense of belonging. \nTheatre Chef Leo is your host for a unique foodie film experience. Enter the diverse world of the Jewish kitchen\, where stories are sifted into dishes\, history is stirred in with spices\, and cultures from around the world are sprinkled on top. Taste\, listen and tell your own story. \nIn preparation for this event\, Leo is learning to make three dishes close to the heart of three Manchester foodies and the process is being woven into a film by Jon Randall. Part documentary\, part Saturday Kitchen wannabee\, part art film\, Good Appetite will be a feast for all the senses! \n  \nTickets on sale soon!

SUMMARY:Manchester Jewish Museum Potluck Supper
DESCRIPTION:This is the first in a series of events I will be hosting together with Manchester Jewish Museum as their first ‘food artist in residence’. For the next few months\, I will be working with the museum’s staff\, volunteers\, stakeholders and visitors to develop a participatory programme of activity related to food. \nUsing diverse examples of Jewish food as a starting point\, we will explore cultural food connections related to the theme of belonging. Food will be considered as a traveller and migrant in terms of how certain foods and recipes arrived in Manchester and the roles they played within the Jewish communities. We are interested in exploring food as cultural identity\, food as art and food as a means of bringing people together. \nWe are beginning to shape some ideas about what having a ‘food artist’ lead part of the museum’s programme might mean\, and what kind of activities this might lead us to undertake. This event will feature a communal dinner cooked from ingredients brought along by our guests. \nPlease get in touch to find out more!

SUMMARY:The Midnight Soup
DESCRIPTION:The Midnight Soup is a piece of theatre during which the audience prepare a meal that they share at the end. \nThe piece starts as a monologue and gently opens out to become a conversation. It tells the story of an unremarkable woman who every day sat down to meticulously record the facts of her life in a diary\, until one day in 2012 she chose her own death. \nThe Midnight Soup is the love letter of a grandson to his grandmother. It is also an edible memorial\, celebrating a life lived to the rhythm of the seasons. \nIt is cleverly and subtly constructed. […] I like the fact that the piece\, simply and without any fuss or forcing\, makes a community out of a group of complete strangers. Lyn Gardner\, The Guardian

It tells the story of an unremarkable woman\, who sat down every day to meticulously record her life in a diary\, until one day she chose her own death. SUMMARY:Alisa Tanaka-King: F.O.C.U.S
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the dinner table\, but this is not a dinner party. This is an invitation to be part of a transient community. A conversation. A journey of food\, a sharing of stories\, a connecting of dots. \nF.O.C.U.S is a conceptual art project that takes place all over the world\, inviting people to share in a dining and conversation experience that embodies social creative practice and sustainability. \nIn form\, the dining experience uses traditional Japanese haute cuisine KAISEKI as it’s foundation. KAISEKI is a cooking art form that balances taste\, texture\, appearance in a specific sequence of small dishes. Local and seasonal ingredients are showcased\, with great importance placed on balance and dining experience. \nF.O.C.U.S goes back to basics: \n Sharing food and stories. \nThe conversation is guided by the host\, Alisa\, who shares stories\, poses questions\, invites responses from the guests at the table. This shared moment creates a community amongst those attending the dinner\, a brief but intimate meeting of strangers\, who may never meet again\, but will always be connected. \nCommunity is born from community\, and as F.O.C.U.S travels around various locations in the world\, the connections extend again. \nStories are shared\, understanding of other people and cultures evolves\, ideas are born\, and people begin to care.

SUMMARY:Le Bistroquet
DESCRIPTION:The Menu Needs You! At Leo’s Bistro\, you are invited to pay for your meal with a recipe rather than with money. The recipe you “pay” with can be a family favourite\, a handed down secret or a personal favourite – the important thing is the story attached to the food. \nThe piece is unashamedly socially engaged\, facilitates conversations between strangers and encourages participants to consider the relationship their eating habits have to their (cultural) identity. It also examines our notion that monetary transactions are the only kind of meaningful exchange we can have in a capitalist society\, gently suggesting that knowledge and stories are also valuable. Open to all.
