SUMMARY:with bread (Lincoln) - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:We are the people with whom we eat. \nCompanion\, noun. \nFrom the Latin com-\, together with & panis\, bread \n‘with bread’ is a performance where the History of bread meets personal histories of migration. Over the course of the performance\, audience members take part in making flatbreads which are served\, along with a seasonal stew\, at the end of the show. The story told in with bread traces the journey of this staple and heavily symbolic food from prehistory to Brexit Britain\, via biblical times and the Arab Spring. \nwith bread is in turn a poetic history lesson\, an opportunity to hear voices from the margins\, and a baking class. with bread is an attempt to explore what it means to share a culture\, to make community and to belong in an everchanging and globalised world. \nIn the context of Brexit and heated debates around identity politics\, with bread brings people together in a joyous celebration of diversity and difference. The piece is performed with a different cast of migrant locals everywhere it takes place.

SUMMARY:Good Appetite
DESCRIPTION:Part of Manchester Jewish Museum’s Festival of Belonging \nJoin us to explore what makes us feel that we belong\, how we assimilate in new places and what happens when we don’t belong. As part of our ‘wandering’ phase\, we have been thinking about the stories in our collection of Jewish people who came to Manchester\, how they attempted to assimilate and foster a sense of belonging. \nTheatre Chef Leo is your host for a unique foodie film experience. Enter the diverse world of the Jewish kitchen\, where stories are sifted into dishes\, history is stirred in with spices\, and cultures from around the world are sprinkled on top. Taste\, listen and tell your own story. \nIn preparation for this event\, Leo is learning to make three dishes close to the heart of three Manchester foodies and the process is being woven into a film by Jon Randall. Part documentary\, part Saturday Kitchen wannabee\, part art film\, Good Appetite will be a feast for all the senses! \n  \nTickets on sale soon!

SUMMARY:The Witching Way (Halifax)
DESCRIPTION:Part fable\, part gig\, part concept album\, this brand new rock opera follows W.’s coming-of-age in a piece that is a rallying cry for the next generation of feminists. \nTwo years ago\, Ali Matthews and Leo Burtin walked the 65 miles that separate Pendle Hill from Lancaster Castle\, retracing the footsteps of the so-called Lancashire Witches – women who were hanged for being out-of-the-ordinary. \nInspired by their journey\, they made The Witching Way\, a musical extravaganza for our times\, confronting Trumpism and homophobia\, and championing the #MeToo movement. \nAfter succumbing to peer pressure and trying to be someone she’s not\, W. is transported to a strange and wondrous landscape. In order to find her way home\, she must embark on a quest\, reckon with her history\, overcome obstacles and ultimately find her voice. \nWith original music spanning punk\, folk\, blues and rock\, The Witching Way features a live band\, music video visuals and animation to deliver a magically-charged rock opera for all ages. \nThe Witching Way experiments with multimedia gig-theatre to explore feminist storytelling and the histories of the Pendle Witches. Join Ali and her band to experience a story brimming with witches\, history\, feminism\, indie music\, experimental theatre and stunning animations.

SUMMARY:The Witching Way
DESCRIPTION:Two years ago Ali Matthews & Leo Burtin walked the 65 miles from Pendle Hill to Lancaster Castle\, retracing the footsteps of the so-called Lancashire Witches who were hanged for seeming a little out of the ordinary. Reflecting on this pilgrimage led them to create the story of The Witching Way. \nAfter trying to be somebody she’s not amidst the perils of peer pressure\, W (our teen witch protagonist) is transported to a cottage in a strange landscape. In order to find her way home she must embark on a quest to reckon with her history\, overcome extraordinary obstacles\, and ultimately find her voice. With music genres spanning folk\, blues\, punk and drone rock\, The Witching Way is a concept album delivered by a live band with animated visuals. Part-fable\, part-coming-of-age story\, part-gig\, this DIY rock opera is a rallying cry for the weird and wonderful among us.

SUMMARY:Listening Tables II
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Acts of Listening Lab postdoctoral fellow Rajni Shah\, ‘Listening Tables’ is a series of four events exploring the relationships between listening\, gathering\, and feminisms. Rather than inviting guest speakers\, Rajni has invited a guest listener to be present at each event\, who will bring their own way of listening\, shaped by their unique lived experiences\, to the table. These events will be carefully held\, and Rajni especially welcomes people who feel marginalised or silenced by more mainstream structures of dialogue and interaction. \nThis second Listening Table will be attended by special guest Leo Burtin. Leo and Rajni met in 2012 when Leo worked on Rajni’s show Glorious\, which had at its heart the idea that strangers might become friends. Since then\, Leo has gone on to work as a producer\, writer\, researcher\, and chef\, creating shows and public interventions that use food as the catalyst to share stories from the margins and to generate transformative conversations between strangers. As a queer white man\, Leo wonders: in what ways could a feminist approach to listening lead us towards radical new imaginings of hospitality? \n*Strictly limited capacity with compulsory sign-up (max 25) – guests will receive further information and a reminder a week before the event. \nFor information on other Listening Table events\, please see this link. \n

SUMMARY:Manchester Jewish Museum Potluck Supper
DESCRIPTION:This is the first in a series of events I will be hosting together with Manchester Jewish Museum as their first ‘food artist in residence’. For the next few months\, I will be working with the museum’s staff\, volunteers\, stakeholders and visitors to develop a participatory programme of activity related to food. \nUsing diverse examples of Jewish food as a starting point\, we will explore cultural food connections related to the theme of belonging. Food will be considered as a traveller and migrant in terms of how certain foods and recipes arrived in Manchester and the roles they played within the Jewish communities. We are interested in exploring food as cultural identity\, food as art and food as a means of bringing people together. \nWe are beginning to shape some ideas about what having a ‘food artist’ lead part of the museum’s programme might mean\, and what kind of activities this might lead us to undertake. This event will feature a communal dinner cooked from ingredients brought along by our guests. \nPlease get in touch to find out more!

SUMMARY:The Futurist Cookbook (and other culinary utopias)
DESCRIPTION:A double bill of two shows\, as part TaPP Festival at the University of Salford \n7pm – The Futurist Cookbook (and other culinary utopias)\nYou are invited to a feast from the future! Set aside all that you ever thought you knew about your favourite foods and join us as we lay the table for tomorrow’s nutrition: now! \nInspired by Marinetti and Fillia’s 1932 cookbook La Cucina Futurista\, this new performance is an invitation to question what we eat\, how we eat it and why we eat it. Put away your spiralizer and make room for your ozonizer as this show will revolutionise your kitchen. There will be no pasta. \n8pm – with bread\nWith Bread is a new multilingual dinner-performance exploring ideas of belonging\, migration\, cultural and linguistic identity. The show will premiere at ARC\, Stockton-On-Tees on 20th March\, 2019 and you are invited to experience this work as it is being developed and will have an opportunity to help shape its future.\nThe term ‘companion’ has its root in the Latin ‘com panis’; “together\, with bread”. A poetic interpretation of this suggests that friendship is borne out of the sharing of food. This is echoed in recent research which demonstrates a causal link between eating together and the well being of communities. Breaking bread offers an experience that goes beyond nutrition; it strengthens the bonds of community. Part-lecture\, part-storytelling event and part-cookery class\, with bread\,Th brings people together in a joyous celebration of diversity and difference.

SUMMARY:Alisa Tanaka-King: F.O.C.U.S
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the dinner table\, but this is not a dinner party. This is an invitation to be part of a transient community. A conversation. A journey of food\, a sharing of stories\, a connecting of dots. \nF.O.C.U.S is a conceptual art project that takes place all over the world\, inviting people to share in a dining and conversation experience that embodies social creative practice and sustainability. \nIn form\, the dining experience uses traditional Japanese haute cuisine KAISEKI as it’s foundation. KAISEKI is a cooking art form that balances taste\, texture\, appearance in a specific sequence of small dishes. Local and seasonal ingredients are showcased\, with great importance placed on balance and dining experience. \n F.O.C.U.S goes back to basics: \n Sharing food and stories. \nThe conversation is guided by the host\, Alisa\, who shares stories\, poses questions\, invites responses from the guests at the table. This shared moment creates a community amongst those attending the dinner\, a brief but intimate meeting of strangers\, who may never meet again\, but will always be connected. \nCommunity is born from community\, and as F.O.C.U.S travels around various locations in the world\, the connections extend again. \nStories are shared\, understanding of other people and cultures evolves\, ideas are born\, and people begin to care.

SUMMARY:Le Bistroquet
DESCRIPTION:The Menu Needs You! At Leo’s Bistro\, you are invited to pay for your meal with a recipe rather than with money. The recipe you “pay” with can be a family favourite\, a handed down secret or a personal favourite – the important thing is the story attached to the food. \nThe piece is unashamedly socially engaged\, facilitates conversations between strangers and encourages participants to consider the relationship their eating habits have to their (cultural) identity. It also examines our notion that monetary transactions are the only kind of meaningful exchange we can have in a capitalist society\, gently suggesting that knowledge and stories are also valuable. Open to all.

SUMMARY:Breaking Bread: On Otherness
DESCRIPTION:Two people are sitting on a couch. A woman and a man. Coming from very different backgrounds\, with polar opposite experiences\, they are artists\, working together. \nAnother artist joins them. They are talking about life\, art\, politics\, childhood\, parents\, economies\, ethnicity\, language\, accent\, identity\, belonging. Otherness keeps arriving. Being an outsider keeps returning. A space between\, a space of being othered\, keeps reappearing. \nSince being awarded the 2017 Nuffield Bursary\, theatre company Two Destination Language (Katherina Radeva and Alister Lownie) have been developing their latest project On Otherness in dialogue with the team at Lancaster Arts\, and with a range artists who work with identity as a subject (including Jenny Sealey\, Pauline Mayers\, Kate Marsh\, Chris Goode\, Rajni Shah\, Season Butler\, Lena Simic\, Sheila Ghelani\, Peter McMaster and Tanya Steinhauser). \nThrough this rich collaboration\, Two Destination Language are exploring the challenges and rewards of making art from the personal experience of difference or being othered. As questions around diversity and equality in our society become more present\, we look at how artists’ work with their own experiences has influenced their artistic practice\, the audiences they make work for and with\, and the conditions in which they make work. \nThis May\, the company are opening this conversation further by inviting you to take a seat at the table\, so that together we may begin an attempt at redefining belonging and otherness. In the spirit of embracing the multiplicity\, complexity and in-between-ness of our identities\, Two Destination Language are working with artist Leo Burtin and producer Alice Booth to host an event that is neither a working lunch\, nor a symposium\, nor a performance. Though it may be all of these things. \nEvent information\nTaking place on 3rd May at Lancaster Arts (LICA Building)\, the event will revolve around sharing food and feature gentle interventions by guest artists selected from Two Destination Language’s conversations. Each element is flavoured by the identity and practice of the participant artists. The interventions will be stimuli for conversation with neighbours as you eat\, reflecting on the themes of the day\, and there will be space to record responses for sharing beyond the room. \nWe look forward to welcoming anyone with an interest in being part of a generous response to the rapidly changing politics of identity. Please book early as this is a limited capacity event. We will email you ahead of time with further information and an opportunity to communicate your dietary and access requirements to us. \nThe ticket price for this event includes food and soft drinks throughout the event. Concessions are available to those who need them to attend\, through self-definition. We would appreciate if those affiliated with an academic institution or regularly funded organisation book a full price ticket so we can offer further discounts and bursaries to people who would not otherwise be able to attend. \nIn the meantime\, if you have any questions\, please get in touch with Leo Burtin on leo@lancasterarts.org or call 01524 594165.
